SYMBOLISM: RATS

In the book 1984 rats symbolize fear. For example, from room 101 when O'Brien tortures Winston with rats. Rats are also a symbol for depravity on another level. When Winston and his citizens get trapped in Big Brother's cage, they become rats. They could become no better than mindless, multiplying rats.
