In George Orwell's
1984, the telescreens are used to symbolise the misuse of technology by a totalitarian government in order to keep its population under control, instead of using it for the greater good of the country. It also symbolizes the way the government manipulates its citizens into having the same beliefs the government has. Lastly, this also symbolizes the lack of privacy citizens have because they are always being monitored.
