Glass Paperweight Symbolism - Christopher Luu

glass-paperweight-1984-jpg.jpg (700×466)

The glass paperweight symbolizes beauty, the past, innocence, and Winston. When he bought this item from an antique store in the prole district, it shows Winston's attempt to reconnect with the past. The Party weakens people's memories and fills their mind with propaganda so that people will think that The Party saved them from oppressive capitalists. People have no idea about the past, but Winston questions about what really happened back then, hence why he bought the paperweight. The paperweight shatters when The Thought Police arrest Winston, symbolizing the end of his questioning of the Party.
